(theGRIO) Originally scheduled in South America on April 9th, a Rick Ross concert was cancelled due to the emcee having yet another seizure. Last year, the rapper suffered two seizures in just six hours, but has appeared to be in good health since. In a statement from Guyanese promoters, Ross was headlining a show at The Guyana National Stadium when the event was quickly shut down. AllHipHop has the latest. Promoters in Guyana have issued a statement regarding a canceled show featuring Rick Ross that was supposed to take place on April 9. The Miami rapper was supposed to hit the stage at the Easter Fest Rozay at Guyana National Stadium, but the show was abruptly canceled. Organizers confirmed…

Black America must be at the table in the battle against HIV/AIDS (theGRIO) After 30 years of the HIV pandemic, one might think that terms such as “community collaboration” and “community participation” would be commonplace among those fighting the disease. But in many communities across the country, this is not the case. In fact, the clock seems to be rolling back to the early days, when the opinions and actions of a small minority marginalized the voices of those who were most impacted by the global pandemic. Make no mistake: many people are indeed living longer with HIV disease as a result of improved treatments. But with all of the dynamic shifts in HIV treatment, prevention, and policy, it is especially disheartening…

Porn industry faces condom push: Actors may be forced to wear protection in sex scenes shot in Los Angeles (NYDN) A proposal to make Los Angeles porn actors wear condoms gained momentum this week, when a health advocacy group announced it had gathered enough signatures to put the question to voters in June. The proposal would require the actors to use protection during sex scenes in order for filmmakers to obtain a permit to shoot within the city of Los Angeles. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the group behind the…

First Lady Makes Headway Calling for Healthy Foods

Michelle-restaurant-16x9-thumb-631xauto-23983

WASHINGTON (AP|theGrio) – Calorie by calorie, first lady Michelle Obama is chipping away at big portions and unhealthy food in an effort to help America slim down. In the year and a half since she announced her campaign to curb childhood obesity, Mrs. Obama has stood alongside Wal-Mart, Olive Garden and many other food companies as they have announced improvements to their recipes — fewer calories, less sodium, better children’s menus. The changes are small steps, in most cases. Fried foods and french fries will still be on the menu, though enticing pictures of those foods may be gone. High-sodium soups, which many consumers prefer, will still be on the grocery aisle. But the amount of…

First Lady Takes ‘Let’s Move!’ Campaign to South

ATLANTA (AP) – First lady Michelle Obama took her 1-year-old campaign against childhood obesity to the South on Wednesday, munching blueberries with second-graders as she toured an elementary school that has embraced her call for healthy eating. The first lady visited the Burgess-Peterson Academy in Atlanta, touting that public school’s efforts to improve student nutrition and fitness as she marked the first anniversary of her “Let’s Move!” campaign. She snacked on some blueberries with a second-grade class and checked out the school’s garden with first-graders. “We’re going to need you to be big and strong because we need you to grow up and do important things,” Obama told the excited pupils, reminding them to eat lots…

Apple Again Turns To Cook in CEO Jobs’ Absence

SAN FRANCISCO — If the past is any indication, Tim Cook’s mastery of inventory management and his high expectations of employees should leave Apple Inc. in good hands while its charismatic leader, Steve Jobs, takes a medical leave of absence. Apple said Monday that Cook, the chief operating officer, will take charge of the iPhone and iPad maker as Jobs focuses on his health. Unlike Jobs’ half-year medical leave in 2009, during which he specified he’d return to work at the end of June and stuck to it, Apple did not say when, if ever, Jobs would return as CEO. That means Cook, 50, considered a logical eventual successor to Jobs, 55, could be in…

POM(pous) Claims? Juice Ads Under Fire

POM(pous) Claims? Juice Makers Accused of Overstating Health Benefits (ABC) It has a sleek, curvy bottle, features the juice from an exotic fruit and has a catchy name, but according to both government and consumer agencies, POM Wonderful is a drink that’s not as wonderful as its manufacturer claims. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission issued a complaint this week against the makers of POM Wonderful 100 Percent Pomegranate Juice and POMxsupplements, accusing the company of making “false and unsubstantiated claims” in its advertisements that these products will prevent or treat heart disease, prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction. But POM Wonderful is just the most recent drink to feature dubious nutritional claims, and experts say while these drinks…

Five Foods to Avoid Before Flying

(ABC) Pre-flight anxiety — spurred by endless baggage lines, security checkpoints and screaming children — need not extend to fears of repeat trips to the airplane lavatory. But eat the wrong thing before you fly and you may be contending with more than just an awful in-flight movie or space-invading neighbor. Unfortunately, airport dining options — like a greasy fast-food burger, oily pizza or a liquid lunch at the concourse bar — are rather limited. Still, if you’re disciplined, avoiding the gut-busting trifecta of grease, alcohol and carbonation can help contribute to a bloat-free flight. There are even a few nutritious foods surprisingly on our “don’t eat” list that are best avoided before you take…

No Risk From Delayed Appendectomy

(ABC) Appendectomies are the most common emergent medical procedure worldwide. And according to a new study, delaying emergency appendectomy for 12 hours or more appears to have no adverse effects during a 30-day follow-up period. A retrospective review of almost 33,000 cases found that the rate of serious complications or death was about three percent, whether the operation occurred within six hours, six to 12 hours, or more than 12 hours after hospital admission. Overall morbidity was about 5.5 percent to 6 percent, regardless of the time from admission to surgery, Dr. Angela M. Ingraham of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and co-authors reported. Differences in operative duration and length of hospital stay, while…
