Love Jones: The Lyrical Possibilities
LYRIC JONES “LOVE JONES”
(UNR) Picture ATL’s Apache Café like the Sanctuary in “Love Jones.” Hollywood’s smoke is in the air and Darius Lovehall has just cleared it with this particular statement. “…The romance is gone? What they’re really saying is they’ve ‘exhausted the possibility’.” Lyric Jones hasn’t exhausted the possibility of romancing music.
From opening statement to closure of her dynamic performance, one can see that she is a very passionate emcee who doesn’t just try to make good music. She makes love to good music. One word in which 22-year old Janelle Clinton describes her “Jones”: “Undefined.” At face value, Lyric Jones is a talented emcee who can also sing. However, she is a multi-facet musician who aims to articulate her jones for music through rhyme and rhythm. She sits in any chair within the band section as a pianist, drummer, or bassist. Jones can also spin records on the 1’s and 2’s. Jones even has her hands in production. Ever seen D’Angelo’s “Me & Those Dreamin’ Eyes” video???? Yeah…. That’s Jones—all the way.
Off-stage, Janelle mingles with her “family.” To every spectator, bar patron, and musician, she is little sister. Her sweet soulful aroma leaves a kindred feeling of nostalgia. She leaves everyone with the widest smile and rushes the stage like a tidal wave. “It’s all hugs and giggles on the street, but I transform on stage providing a shock value,” says Jones. And as she opens her set with a Shawty Lo “Dey Know” cover, her flow refreshes the crowd like the star quality artist she is. Jaws drop, eyes are wide open as they swim in her artistry. As she performs her single “Swexy,” the crowd can foresee her possibilities.
The possibility of opening for Trey Songz at University of Georgia became an energetic experience. What spectators call “her first big opening gig’ became engraved in Jones’ memory as being the “hard gig.” Jones faces the music with a modest statement. “Nobody was there to see me.” Regardless, having home-court advantage over the Virginian vocalist provided curiosity for her fellow UGA peers. That same modesty with a double-shot of confidence allowed her to speak a drunken truth. “I murked that show!!” Jones’ star quality became a twinkle in Trigga Trey’s eye. Their backstage candid became Mr. Neverson’s Facebook profile picture. Her bubbling spirit is infectious…and so is the flow. “Trey is gonna remember my name.” Lyric Jones aims to share her own perspective….lyrically. How ironic was that last statement? Because either way, she’s doing her. As far as Hip-Hop is concerned, Jones is convinced that the game is currently a one-lane highway for female MCs. “Not fair to only have one option,” says the lovely lyricist.
Jones upholds her self-proclaimed, publically-supported title as “MC.” Jones can move a crowd…lyrically. There I say??? She’s doing her. No manager, no street team, just raw energy that draws lovers who jones for Lyric and support her. However, she encourages those who have her in their phonebook to come see her perform. She says, “Do it now or do it later,” because when she blows, “it’s gonna happen fast…They will remember my name.”
“IS THAT ALRIGHT???”—Darius Lovehall
