Mo’Nique received the Best Supporting Actress for the film “Precious” Sunday night. Mo’Nique was the 16th African American actress to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

The comedienne and actress shot to fame in the UPN series “The Parkers” while also making a name for herself as a comic on the stand-up circuit. Mo’Nique has also won a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Golden Globe Award and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award for “Precious.”

This makes Monique the sixth African American female to win an Academy Award.
